'Snowdrop' has drawn controversy since its first week of airing. Despite all that, the drama, starring BLACKPINK's Jisoo and Jung Hae In, is on the list of the most popular shows this week.
Although the broadcast was colored by controversy, "Snowdrop" starring BLACKPINK's Jisoo (Black Pink) and Jung Hae In turned out to be among the most popular dramas. Recently, JTBC's Saturday-Sunday night drama has become a hot topic in cyberspace.
On Tuesday (21/12), Good Data Corporation released the top 10 television hot topics in the third week of December. The popularity of television programs as well as the names involved are announced once a week. The popularity calculation is based on internet searches, articles, and social media activities.
For this week's most popular drama lineup, "Snowdrop" shot to number 2 under MBC's "The Red Sleeve". The ranking was followed by "Bulgasal: Immortal Souls" and "Our Beloved Summer" respectively.
As for the ranks of the most popular actors and actresses, Jisoo is in 4th place and Jung Hae In is in 9th place. Obtaining this ranking shows the popularity of the drama in the midst of all the controversies that befell it.
"Snowdrop" itself tells the story of a love story between a student Eun Young Ro (Jisoo) hiding and caring for a spy disguised as an elite college student Im Su Ho (Jung Hae In). In addition, this drama takes place in Seoul in 1987 where protests against the dictatorial government of South Korea are rife.
Shortly after the synopsis of "Snowdrop" was released, controversy arose because Jisoo's character named Young Cho was allegedly inspired by Chun Young Cho, a pro-democracy activist. In addition, this drama also contains historical distortions which have underestimated the democratic movement and glorified the National Security Planning Agency.
It didn't stop there, after the first two episodes aired a petition appeared to boycott "Snowdrop" and stop its broadcast. In response, JTBC has released an official statement regarding the drama.
"Most of the misunderstandings pointed out by many people, such as historical distortion and underestimating the democratization movement will be resolved through upcoming drama episodes as the show goes through its storyline," said JTBC. (wk/inta)
