Director Hirokazu Koreeda also briefly revealed his reasons for choosing IU as one of the main players. "I fell in love with the Hallyu wave drama while staying at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic," said the director.

"I became a big fan of IU after watching 'My Mister'. In the second half of 'My Mister', I kept crying watching IU's scene. I thought no one could play this character other than her," added the director.

"Broker" is the first Korean film made by Japanese director Koreeda Hirokazu. The director is already very popular in the film industry as he won the Palme d'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival with "Shoplifters".
