Lee Jung Jae Expresses Concerns About Infidelity-themed Dramas That Are Trending
Lee Jung Jae

Lee Jung Jae appeared on tvN's entertainment program 'Yoo Quiz on the Block' on January 12 and was asked about how it seems like a long time since he last acted in a melodrama.

If you have watched the recent drama where the love of middle-aged people is mostly surrounded by infidelity, you will sympathize with Lee Jung Jae's comments. The actor shared about the current trend of "middle-aged romance infidelity" in K-drama.

Lee Jung Jae appeared on tvN's entertainment program “Yoo Quiz on the Block” on January 12 and was asked how it seems like it's been a while since he last acted in a melodrama. He replied, "This is a sad reality."

"When I was young, melodrama was something very beautiful, refreshing, and heart-wrenching. (On the other hand), melodrama at my age was surrounded by infidelity, hurting someone to cover it up and falling apart," he continued.

Lee Jung Jae continued his thoughts by saying, "I wonder if a melodrama of this age needs to be developed like that." The reason why he said such a thing was immediately confirmed in the drama market recently.

Most actors and actresses are in their 40s and 50s such as Uhm Ki Joon, Kim So Yeon of SBS's “Penthouse,” Go Hyun Jung of JTBC's “Reflection of You,” Kim Kang Woo of JTBC's “The Artificial City,” and Lee Sung Jae. from Channel A's "Show Window: The Queen's House" as well as Jeon Mi Do from JTBC's "Thirty, Nine" as Lee Jung Jae put it, playing roles where they commit an affair in the drama and hurt and mess someone up to cover it up.

Of course, if we look at the explosive reactions to "Penthouse", "Show Window: The Queen's House", and "Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce)", you can fully understand why the broadcast industry is still fond of infidelity dramas.

This not only makes actors like Lee Jung Jae reach out to other genre dramas that are not melodramas, but also causes fatigue for some viewers. There are clearly plenty of actors ready to challenge the non-affair melodrama genre at any time. Let's all look forward to more varied melodrama genres in the future. (wk/goddess)
