Large-Scale, Here's the Efforts of 'The Silent Sea' Production Team to Create Space Background

Recently the production team of Gong Yoo's drama 'The Silent Sea' revealed an interesting story behind the scenes. If you're curious, check out their full story below.

Netfilx will soon release a new drama entitled "The Silent Sea". This drama itself is quite interesting because of the storyline and the main cast.

"The Silent Sea" tells the story of an elite crew (astronauts) who go to a research base on the Moon to carry out a special mission. This drama is set in the year 2075, where the Earth has been destroyed due to the depletion of supplies of various important resources.

Although it only has 8 episodes, the drama, starring Gong Yoo and Bae Doona, takes a long time to produce. The production team also uses advanced technology with LED panels to make the moon display and various other settings look realistic.

Producer Jung Woo Sung shared, "Everything, including the SF genre and the base located on the moon, is a new challenge." Director Choi Hang Yong added, "I tried to minimize the artificial feeling while maintaining the realistic feeling."

The first thing the production team did was create the surface of the Moon. Land of the Moon is made with special materials but the design is changed to add imagination for dramatic fun.

Bae Doona said, "It was the most realistic lunar surface. It was like a collection of ambitions that made me feel like I was actually stepping on the Moon."

The production team also used LED panels to give the impression of space on the Moon's surface. It aims to replace the blue screen commonly used in drama and film production.

Bae Doona commented, "I didn't think that it was an LED. I just thought that it was an extension of the surface of the Moon. It looked so natural, that I almost didn't notice it while acting."

Not only that, the spacecraft that will land on the moon is a large set that was built for three months. This set is also built sturdy enough that it can be lifted and tilted with a crane.

Art director Lee Na Gyum explained, "I tried to express it roughly as if the outer layer had been peeled off by blowing screws and wires. I wanted to emphasize the tension of the crew who went to a remote place on a mission."

Balhae Base, which has a great mystery is the core of the story of this drama. Art director Lee Na Gyum explained that he considers the Balhae base a "military stronghold with secrets".

"The exposed materials and structural elements of the Brutalist architectural style that was popular from the 1950s to the 1980s, lend themselves to that expression. And it turns out to be a crude, cryptic giant base hiding the cutting-edge technology that could save humanity." he concluded.

Meanwhile, "The Silent Sea" will be released by Netflix on December 24. This drama is expected to follow the success of other Netflix latest series such as "Squid Game", "My Name" to "Hellbound". (wk/eval)
