Recently, EXO's Lay Fans Have Been Exclaiming Their Disappointment After Finding Many Similarities From Song Lyrics To Their Idol's Music Video Similar To The Single Of A Singer From The Philippines.

Recently on May 31, Filipino singer FELIP who also promoted as a member of the Filipino boy band SB19 under the stage name Ken is now under intense scrutiny by the EXO fandom. Fans discovered that the singer allegedly plagiarized Lay's song "Lit" which was released in 2020.

According to fans, FELIP's new single "Moon" which was released on May 28 has some similarities to Lay's song "Lit". These similarities are known such as the beat and rhythm of the song, visuals, and the scene frames in the EXO member's music video.

A user on Tiktok created a video highlighting the similarities between the two songs in style and beat. This claim has been viewed more than 30,000 times.

"@bambaekluvr. I'm a Filo and this needs to be addressed. There are indeed similarities. It would be fine if the producers said their idea was inspired/derived from Lay. But they didn't and that's the problem. I hope their management can explain this, ' wrote the netizen.

Meanwhile on Twitter, another user shared a side-by-side comparison of the two music videos showing some similar visuals and backgrounds, such as dragons, deserts, color levels, and more. After FELIP's music video and song caught attention among EXO fans, fans started criticizing the song production team for plagiarism and started chanting "Respect Zhang Yixing" on Twitter.

Following the backlash, FELIP and his team have issued a statement the same day addressing the plagiarism allegations. Via FELIP's Twitter account, he shared a lengthy statement revealing that his creative process for "Moon" took inspiration from many artists. One of them is Lay and it refers to the song "Lit." However, the Filipino singer denies plagiarism and details the differences between "Moon" and "Lit."

"While there may be some similarities between the sounds of 'Lit' and 'Moon,' a closer examination of the chord progressions, instrumentation, samples used, and even syllables will prove the claim to the contrary," FELIP said in its statement.

"In addition, the melodies and ethnic chants in 'Moon' are based on authentic Filipino ritual music made modern with the addition of rock and hip-hop elements," said FELIP.

Regarding other visuals in the music video, FELIP cites the Filipino play "The Moons," the Filipino mythological creature "Bakunawa," and the Filipino mythological goddess Haliya. "Apart from the lyrics and the music video for 'Moon' is made into a metaphor for real-world problems while remaining true to common knowledge of what happened between the characters in most versions of ancient lore," continued FELIP's explanation.

FELIP continued if the song was done carefully and accounted for every detail in the music video if it all had a cultural basis. However it is displayed with some variations so as not to offend any culture or natives. Despite the explanation, fans were still not satisfied and criticized the singer for failing to properly praise Lay. (wk/taki)
