Recently, BTS put on a phenomenal performance at the 2022 Grammy Awards. However, the group did not win one of their nominations, inviting mixed comments.
Every year, expectations rise and fall drastically as BTS (Bangtan Boys) continues to be included in the Grammy Awards nominations, but never wins. But according to DFSB Collective President Bernie Cho, that's not the most important thing.
Recently, BTS gave a phenomenal performance at the 2022 Grammy Awards. However, the group did not win one of their nominations, and many felt BTS was insulted once again by not receiving the award.
Both Suga and RM (Rap Monster) have addressed the controversy. And now DFSB Collective President Bernie Cho is talking about it.
After the 2022 Grammy Awards, Bernie Cho appeared at the Arirang News Center for the K-ENTERTAINMENT&BEYOND news segment, and he explained why the Recording Academy kept failing to recognize BTS.
Bernie Cho explained that the Grammys don't pick winners based on music fan votes the way other award shows do. Instead, it's the voices of music industry insiders and influencers.
While BTS has many fans, including in the music industry, there are still many, especially at the Recording Academy, who may not be so aware of BTS' true talent. So, Bernie Cho reflected on BTS' previous performances at the Grammy Awards.
"The reality is that over the years, from 2019 to a few days ago, BTS really never had the right kind of first impression showcase. In 2019, they were on stage briefly to give awards," said Cho.
"In 2020, they were in the states briefly for a cameo, collaborating, with Lil Nas X for 'Old Town Road,' and then last year, they had their first official appearance, but it was actually pre-recorded from Seoul," he continued.
Cho believed that it was vital that BTS had the opportunity to appear live in front of industry insiders at the Grammys to make a mark for future recognition, and that they actually did.
After BTS' appearance at the 2022 Grammy Awards, everyone couldn't stop talking about them. It has also been talked about for a long time.
"This is the first time I've heard the term 'air jacket guitar,' the movement they do where all the jackets are in sync, tied, and then somehow unraveled. I'm still trying to do slow motions to figure out how it works."
While ARMYs were well aware of BTS' unexpected ability to perform live, many witnessed it for the first time that night. So, those who decide who wins are finally seeing BTS' unrivaled skills and energy firsthand.
"When you talk about boy bands and live, there's always the assumption that they're lip syncing. It's very clear that they do this live perfectly, and one of the things that popped up on Twitter was, 'These guys are so fit. How can they dance like that and sing like that and not sweat or run out of breath?'"
Bernie Cho believes that BTS' performance of 'Butter' at the 2022 Grammy Awards is the strong statement the group needs for the music industry to finally fully recognize them. No one can match the performance of BTS.
"So I think they really make a strong statement to the industry that these people are real. This is the reason why they are not only the biggest boy band in the world but also the biggest band in the world, period," said Cho.
"BTS's performance fascinated people, and the next morning, the media showed BTS' performance at the top, very close to the pinnacle of the best live shows, and that said a lot," he continued. (wk/chus)
