On January 4th, NCT fans noticed that a new song had been posted on NCT U's official Spotify account. The song was not by NCT U, which led many fans to believe that the group's Spotify had been hacked.
Although the song "What You Need" lists NCT U as the artist, fans immediately knew the song did not belong to the bpy group made by SM Entertainment. The reason is, there was no previous announcement from SM that NCT U would release a song with the title "What You Need".
When they checked the song's credits, they saw that it was written and produced by someone named Kemony. There is an artist named Kemony who has his own official Spotify account, and it is suspected that he is the hacker of the NCT U account.
As fans play the song, they're greeted by a trap-inspired beat that accompanies a man singing lyrics like "Why am I so sad?" and "Everyone left me by my side."
The song doesn't sound like any of the previous NCT U releases. Fans took to Twitter and TikTok to spread the word about the alleged hack.
"@NCTsmtown @SMTOWNGLOBAL Has NCT U's spotify account been hacked? There is a new single released from January 4, 2022 but it doesn't seem like an official song at all. The song is called 'What You Need,'" wrote a fan.
"Looks like this guy kemony/FNF RICHER hacked NCT U's spotify account or did something like that. The first song appeared as a new release on the NCT U spotify page... and it's still there @SMTOWNGLOBAL @NCTsmtown," wrote another fan.
While many fans believe "What U Need" and the songs uploaded to NCT U's account in November were uploaded by hackers, it is possible that the songs were somehow wrongly flagged by Spotify's system. Until now, "What U Need" is still registered as an NCT U song. (wk/dewi)
