'Snowdrop' demands to stop broadcasting, this is the final verdict from the court

The Seoul Western District Court announced its final verdict regarding the civil lawsuit against the JTBC drama 'Snowdrop'. Check out the full explanation below.

The court has finally announced the fate of the JTBC drama "Snowdrop" which is currently facing a historical distortion controversy. According to a report from Yonhap News on Wednesday (29/12), the Seoul Western District Court has rejected the application filed by the civil group World Citizens' Declaration (WCD) demanding that "Snowdrop" stop broadcasting.

Previously, WCD stated that "Snowdrop" had glorified the NSA to the point of hurting the feelings of victims of the Democratization Movement and their families. The organization is also concerned that the "Snowdrop" plot will have a negative impact on generations who have not experienced this historical era.

After hearing the arguments, the Court stated that it is difficult to say that WCD's rights have been violated by "Snowdrop", unless the substance of the drama is directed at the organization.

The court stated, "Even if the play is based on a distorted view of history like the claims of WCD, it's hard to say that people who experience it will accept it blindly."

"There is no written legal provision to recognize the 'benefit of creditors who wish to inherit the spirit of the democratic struggle and to stand in solidarity with those who oppose transboundary state violence' as claimed by creditors," the Court said.

The court continued, "It is difficult to see that the creditor's personal rights are violated unless the content of the play is directly directed at the creditor, even in the moral rights derived from it."

"A creditor cannot apply in the public name at will for fear of violating their personal rights," concluded the Court. Accordingly, "Snowdrop" will continue to air as scheduled.

Meanwhile, "Snowdrop" tells the story of the love story of a South Korean student and a North Korean spy in 1987. Because 1987 was a turbulent period in Korea, this drama had drawn strong criticism and was boycotted by the South Korean public. (wk/eval)
