Recently, This Popular Music Site Just Announced About Their System Change Plans. This Is Done Following The Announcement Of Other Music Sites, Melon Also Announced Some Major Changes.

K-Pop music fans must be familiar with various music streaming sites, one of which is the Genie Music site. Genie Music is a subsidiary of KT Corporation, a South Korean company that specializes in the production and distribution of music content.

Recently, this popular music site has just announced plans to change their system. This was done following an announcement from another music site, Melon, which also announced a number of their major changes including the realtime chart.

On May 19, Korea's biggest music platform, Melon, announced it would make a major overhaul on the realtime chart. This will include switching the chart from ratings based on hourly usage per song to charts that are calculated based on the number of unique listeners over the past 24 hours, with no ranking shown.

This was done following the launch of recent music platforms including FLO from SK Telecom and Naver's Vibe which also operate without realtime charts as a way to prevent graphic manipulation. After the announcement, news outlets reported predictions that Genie Music would also undergo reform.

Yesterday, Wednesday (5/20), a source from Genie Music told Xportsnews that they would not follow Melon's decision to remove the realtime chart. However, they will continue to make other changes so that chart abuse can be avoided

"We plan to continue to use realtime charts while maintaining their proper functions," said Genie's representative. "Through technical improvements, we are limiting chart abuse and we are currently looking for different ways we can convey the user's listening patterns to music."

Genie Music itself was originally a music content division of Blue Cord Technology, which was founded in 1991. The same division was then owned by Muz (now Olleh Music), one of the major music portals in South Korea.

This division was also strengthened by the acquisition of Doremi Media (one of South Korea's famous music publishers) in 2000. In 2007, Blue Cord was acquired by KT Freetel, and after joining the former company, formed a separate company music division called KTF Music.

In 2009, the company changed its name to KT Music due to the merger of KTF and its parent company, KT Corporation. The company then bought KMP Holdings in 2012. Following LG Uplus's investment, the company changed its name to Genie Music in March 2017.
