IU may be one of the biggest Korean artists right now, but her journey to the top has not always been smooth. Recently, the 1993-born singer and actress looked back on her early debut days.
IU debuted in 2008 with the single "Lost Child," a soulful ballad that flaunts her strong vocals. Even though other idols like SHINee paid attention to his talent, the public did not react positively.
"As soon as I started singing the first line, insults were directed at me. (Audience) at that time said, 'Have you ever practiced?'" Said IU on the show "Strong Heart".
In an interview with JoongAng Daily three years later, IU considered her own debut a flop. Instead of looking back with disappointment, he was grateful for the experience.
"I think I've climbed the ladder bit by bit over the years. My first album failed, but I'm grateful for it. If I become successful as soon as I debut, I won't appreciate my staff members and the popularity I enjoy now," he said. IU.
The first award IU ever received was "Rookie of the Month" from the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism in November 2008. There was a bit of fanfare around the achievement, but she is still grateful for it.
"I got a new artist award this month called 'Power Rookie.' This is my first award since my debut, so it's very important, "said IU. The owner of the real name Lee Jieun couldn't help but share his admiration for being given this award, especially considering the intense competition at that time.
"A lot of talented new singers came out this month. I feel honored and I feel a little numb when I think of getting an award, not them. I am very grateful to the people who chose me. It makes me want to work harder," said IU.
Just a few years later, IU is dominating the charts and award shows! His latest album, "LILAC", was released on March 25th, and all 10 of his songs charted on the music streaming platform MelOn. The title track "LILAC" quickly rose to No.1 on the MelOn Weekly Chart, making it the 24th song to ever reach the top position. (wk / dewi)
