JTBC released a statement regarding the controversy over the plot plot and timing of their new drama "Snowdrop". TV stations also discussed the controversy over the role of Jisoo BLACKPINK (Black Pink).

As is well known, the Korean public did not accept the premise of "Snowdrop" well and started a petition to cancel the drama because the plot was thought to distort history and romanticize sensitive issues.

The previous "Snowdrop" plot focused on North Korean spies who were suspected of being students participating in demonstrations. Due to his injuries, he ends up in a female university dormitory where a female student treats his wounds and hides them.

The public takes issue with the fact that many student protesters during the Democracy Movement were unfairly tortured by military forces using the excuse that these students were spies from the North. The fact that the male lead was a spy who was suspected by students would be an insult to the characters who died in the action.

Other problems that arose included choosing a name for the female lead, Young Cho, played by Jisoo. The name is allegedly taken from a student who was active as an activist during the Democracy Movement and is still alive today.

JTBC has previously released a statement to address the controversy, but was deemed unsatisfactory by. The new statement from JTBC dispels speculation surrounding the plot and character settings by revealing part of the storyline's true story. The following is the full statement from JTBC shared via Twitter on March 30, 2021.

"JTBC will reveal our statement once again regarding the drama 'Snowdrop.' Even after our statement regarding 'Snowdrop' was released, criticism and speculation continued and we are sending a revised statement to resolve this misunderstanding."

"The controversy started because of the one-sided information combining incomplete synopsis as well as partially leaked character introductions. Doubt elaborates on this fragmented information while misleading content is circulated as if it were true. Of course, this responsibility rests with the production team who failed to keep up. the confidentiality of these materials, which have not been perfected, is strictly enforced. "

JTBC then revealed part of the 'Snowdrop' plot, starting from the story plot to the characters in it through detailed points.

"1. On the issue of belittling the Democratic Movement, 'Snowdrop' is not a drama related to the Democratic Movement. There is no arrangement in which male and female leads participate or lead the Democratic Movement. On the other hand, there will be figures who are unjustly accused and oppressed. as a spy during the military regime in the 80s. "

2. 'Snowdrop' uses the background and theme of the 1987 political situation surrounding the presidential election and not the Democratic Movement. A fictional story will be told around the military regime, the National Security Service and how they have vested interests, colluding with the North Korean dictatorship to maintain power. . "

"3. Under this background, the main characters that emerge will be North Korean agents and National Security Agencies pursuing them. They will not be characters representing their own government or organizations. They are characters who will accentuate this immoral greed for power for reforming the regime, as well as the critical views of the National Security Service which actively supports it. Therefore, criticism that Snowdrop romanticizes spies and the National Security Agency is irrelevant. "

4. Regarding the depiction of the National Security Agency as 'honest' for rejecting a strong role in the country. On the other hand, he was disappointed by his colleagues who managed to avoid (the NSA's original aim) of catching spies. Instead, he took the role in abroad as a Black Agent. He too is someone who sticks to his principles and will see whatever he thinks is right to the end, while turning his back on corrupt organizations. "

"5. The character in the drama with the name 'Chun Young Cho' has no relevance to the revered 'Chun Young Cho'. However, we will change the name of the female lead because of the criticism linking her (to the drama)."

"Based on the information above, we ask that from now on you do not disseminate and direct public opinion based on false information as if it were true. We hope that it will be acknowledged that this action will cause serious damage and reduce the many creators who are trying to create works. the good one."

"JTBC will do its best to receive good reviews through our complete drama," concluded JTBC in a question related to the drama, which also stars Jung Hae In. (wk / chus)
