MAMAMOO has introduced their new three-part project in 2021. This project is titled "WAW", which will feature a comeback album, concerts and documentaries.
RBW as their agency shared details for WAW, which stands for "Where Are We". They stated that this is a project where MAMAMOO seems to be asking themselves where they are. They will combine MAMAMOO's honest feelings they have gained after being idols for seven years, their experiences, and their thoughts about the future.
Their comeback will occur on June 2nd while their concert will be held in the summer. The documentary's release date has not been revealed. Initially, the concert was scheduled for the end of May, but was postponed due to the coronavirus.
The group recently made a comeback with the release of a full album titled "Travel", and their second single, "Aya" on November 3rd. The album broke the group's personal sales record, selling a reported 100,000 copies on its first day and over 128,000 copies in its first week, and additionally topped the iTunes charts in 29 countries.
Described as a "180 degree flip" from the retro-pop style "Dingga," the second single from Travel, "Aya," was described by critics as "alluring" and "captivating". The song successfully peaked in the top 40 of the Gaon Digital Chart.
In January 2021, RBW announced that Solar and Moonbyul had renewed their contracts with their agency, while Whee In and Hwasa are currently discussing contract renewals. On March 30, Hwasa officially renewed her contract with RBW, with Wheein's contract still under discussion.
On May 1, MAMAMOO held a global virtual concert on the live-streaming platform LiveNOW, becoming the first South Korean music artist to hold a concert on the platform. The group performed some of their biggest hits, including "Dingga," "Hip," and "Starry Night," during the New York-themed show, although received light criticism for being pre-recorded and not fully living up to fan expectations.
